Brianna’s Story
Brigida, an LSA nurse, provided postpartum health care for Brianna and her newborn son Camryn, and gave Brianna guidance on breastfeeding and infant care. “She was very encouraging and kept me calm, because I was frightened,” Brianna said. “Brigida gave me that extra support that I really needed.”
Here is Brianna’s story, in her own words:
I had high blood pressure during delivery, while I was in labor. When I was in the hospital, one of my nurses said that they were offering a service to have a nurse come visit me and Camryn. I was kind of hesitant about the program because I only had high blood pressure during delivery. I felt like I didn’t need a nurse. But then she did more than just check on the high blood pressure.
She has given me a manual breast pump – I needed one. She offered some advice on how to breastfeed when I was trying to get him to latch on. I received an episiotomy when I gave birth and she helped me with that. She also helped me when I was concerned about my son’s circumcision. She talked to me about things like the way he should lay and taking care of him as a newborn.
She was very encouraging and kept me calm, because I was frightened. You think you know it all until you experience it. Then it’s like – oh, I don’t know it all!
Although I do have a lot of support from my family and friends to help me with the baby, Brigida was just that extra support that I think was really helpful. I told her the last time she was here, I really appreciate her visiting us.
