Our 12-month program helps reduce missed school and work days, as well as emergency room and hospital visits for those with asthma.
The Environmental Health Services program was established in 1997 in response to the high rate of asthma among children in East Harlem. Our home-visiting community health workers identify and actively assist families to modify housing conditions and household living habits in order to improve indoor air quality, asthma symptoms, and overall health and well-being.
We assess the home environment, teach safe and effective ways to address unhealthy conditions, offer community workshops, engage in asthma-related research, advocate for healthy housing, and work with tenant leaders to get needed repairs for building conditions that negatively impact their health.
